The
Tijuana Country Club: Golf Oasis in an Urban Jungle
Located a mere 10 minutes from San Diego, the Tijuana
Country Club is a pleasant Alister MacKenzie designed course
that offers a good old fashioned game of golf in the middle of
a booming metropolis. Its pretty hillside location, beautiful
landscaping and gorgeously groomed greens are a natural compliment
to the earthy Mexican hospitality that golfers enjoy at this
semi-private club.
One of golf's great architects, Alister MacKenzie was originally
a medical doctor who felt that golf was the best cure for all his
patients. He designed many world class tracks including the esteemed
Augusta National Golf Course, as well as the Lahinch Golf Club's
Old Course in Ireland.
The Tijuana golf course was designed in 1927, and it has remained
much the same ever since. The city of Tijuana has grown up around
the club, but the course remains a golf oasis in the midst of an
urban jungle. (In fact, the Tijuana CC is the only golf course
in this city with a population of almost 2 million.) The club's
many other features, such as caddies, a driving range, electric
and hand carts, golf instruction, youth clinics, a pro shop, same
day club repair, and a popular restaurant, all combine to provide
golfers with a memorable golf experience.

Highlights
The condition of the fairways on the Tijuana golf course can be
slightly firm in places, and there may be an odd bare spot, but
the tendency is for longer drives. Watch out for the 2nd hole:a
par 3 playing 228 yards against the wind. The 4th hole plays from
a high tee box which gives players a sprawling view of the city.
The 9th hole is a short par 5 and provides a chance to come in
under par. The back nine becomes more hilly and has numerous bends,
the first one starting at the 10th hole, a long par 4 (461 yards
end to end). No.13 is a long 410 yard blind dogleg. Holes 16 and
17 are both par 5 but the 16th is short and very narrow. The last
hole is a 229-yard par 3 with wind and water hazards. It's an exhilarating
way to enter the club house, where a round of Margaritas awaits!
Where to Stay
The
luxurious Grand Hotel of Tijuana, adjacent to
the course, offers just the right combination of comfort, nightlife
and shopping. A less expensive alternative is the Hotel
Emporio Tijuana, also located near the golf course. If
you like Caesar Salad be sure to check out its birthplace at the Caesar
Hotel & Restaurant. Conveniently situated downtown
on Avenue Revolucion, Caesar's has a pleasant outside seating area
and great food.
Wherever you choose to stay or eat, the Tijuana Country Club will
provide you with an enjoyable golf getaway. Despite its urban location,
this course is a good Baja golf value. Book
your tee times online or call the Club toll free at (888)
217-1165.
