Cabo Golf Courses: Mayan Palace Golf
Los Cabos
A
Mario Shedjnan design, Mayan Palace Golf Los Cabos (formerly the
San José Municipal Golf Course) is a meticulously maintained
course meant for both intermediate and beginner golfers. However,
golfers of any skill level will appreciate playing this interesting
layout that is completed integrated into the desert and ocean geography.
Its warm and friendly family atmosphere is enhanced by the colorful
bouganvilleas that surround the course. If you are looking for
a change of pace from the surrounding championship courses, this
fun 9-hole course is an excellent alternative.
The
first tee offers a panoramic view of the Sea of Cortez. This par
four hole slopes downward, with a wide fairway that doglegs to
the left. The 7th hole features more dramatic ocean views on the
left, and a mountain view facing you as you approach the green.
This hole is particularly challenging, with a large lake at the
bottom as well as a lateral sand trap at the back of the green.
The final hole of the course is another favorite, with a wide sloping
fairway with numerous sand traps.
No reservations are required at Mayan Palace, but it does tend
to be crowded. As one of the cheapest of all the local courses,
it is advised to book in advance to get preferred tee times.

"My wife and I enjoyed several trips to the area, staying
at Laguna Vista each time right off the 6th hole of what in 1994
was the Campo de Golf course. I believe I paid $45 USD for 18 holes.
At the current prices, you would never get my money to play there
again! An interesting phenomenon of many of the corridor courses
(if not all) is that they have such little play! Gee, I wonder
why! My tennis game will improve..." Overall rating: 2/5 -

"I played this course for 8 years, then Mayan Palace took
it over and the rates went sky high. I haven't played it since.
The Mayan Palace people aren't very accomodating to lower rates
or package deals. The course is short, but challenging, because
of a lot of sand traps around the greens. It is in average condition.
The greens are not nearly as good as all the other expensive courses,
but they are playable. It appears golf in Los Cabos is going to
be the most expensive in Mexico and a rich man's destination."
